UFC

Now, I am writing about UFC because a lot of people either LOVE it or they absolutely hate it more then almost anything. Personally, I really enjoy watching it, I wouldn't say that I am a die hard fan, I'll leave that to Bryan and his Dad. However there is something about the hype and the build up and the extreme athleticism that appeals to me. It takes so much skill and work it is astounding to me.

The biggest thing is that this isn't just a sport, or a job. This is literally a lifestyle. Training every single day in the gym, working to gain weight or lose weight and preparing months in advance for 1 fight that could make or break their entire career. There is definitely a part of me that has a huge respect for that.

First off, let me tell you kind of how it works. There are 8 different weight classes, which means there are 8 different world champions right now.

First off, here are the weight classes along with the reining champions right now:

Heavy weight- Junior Dos Santos
Light Heavyweight- Jon Jones
Middle Weight- Anderson Silva
Welter Weight- George St. Pierre
Light Weight- Benson Henderson
Feather Weight- Jose Aldo
Bantam Weight- Dominick Cruz (interm- Renan Barao)
Fly Weight- Demetrious Johnson

The most amazing thing about these guys is that they have really worked their whole life to be where they are right now. The most impressive thing is title defenses  which is the amount of time they have defended their title. Anderson Silva is the longest reining champions in the world he has defended his title 10 times and has been the champ since 2006. It is very very impressive. The next longest is the Canadian favourite GSP, who has defended 7 times!

Everyone has their favourite fighter, lets be honest.So... I will tell you about my favourite. Of course one of them is George "Rush" St. Pierre, because I am Canadian and I am very proud that he is from here. Not only because he is a Canadian but because he is such a stand up guy. He never trash talks, he is really just so humble it is insane...Seeing as how he is one of the toughest guys in the world. He was born in Quebec and became the Champion in 2008 and just recently defended his title against Carlos Condit. GSP is one of the most dangerous guys in the world, not only is he the champion but he has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and in Kyokushin Karate. If you are a Canadian you should be proud that this guy represents Canada with such strength.

Now, on to my very favorite. His name is Urijah Faber. His is from California and has continually been a fan favourite since he entered the UFC. Now, to be completely honest, I am not sure why is my favorite. But I just love him, not in a creepy way...Which is how this sounds? haha. He is 33 and has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His last fight was actually here in Calgary. Bryan and his Dad got to meet him at the open work outs, which I had to work for and was sooo sad I didn't get to go, but they did get some things signed for me which was awesome.  His biggest rival is Dominick Cruz who is actually the Feather Weight champion right now!! They were both coaches for TUF which is The Ultimate Fighter, they coach up and comers and then at the end the winner gets a contract with the UFC and the coaches fight each other. They were supposed to fight however Cruz got injured so he had to fight Barao, which is why he is the interm Feather weight Champion.  There is just something about "The California Kid" that I just love! =) Hopefully we will get to see him fight again soon!

The point of this blog wasn't to change anyone mind about hating the sport, but honestly, this is the most difficult sport in the world and I have nothing but respect for that. It isn't about beating the shit out of the guy in the opposing corner its about proving that you have worked hard enough to be there and that you deserve it. I feel like the people that don't like it, just don't really understand it!

Toodles!
-Shelby

First Things First!

My name is Shelby. I am a indecisive 20 year old from Alberta! I was born and raised in Alberta, I am from a teeny tiny town that no one has ever heard of. So,  half the time I don't even tell people. It just creates a big mess of trying to explain where it is and the other person truly thinking that it is somewhere in Siberia.  I was born on January 25th , to two people who have been together for about 26 years now! Never married though, just engaged =) It is sooo confusing trying to explain to people my parents situation! We have 2 houses, because my Dad works in the city 6 days out of the week. Everyone just assumes my parents are divorced, seeing as how they don't get to live together and they have different last names! I would probably assume the same thing if someone told me that weird story haha! I have 1 sister that is my very best friend. She is 9 years older then me, is married with 2 kids and 1 more on the way!!! She has 2 little boys that are absolu...

Growing Up... Live and Learn.

Hey guys! Sorry it has been a little while. I just feel like I can't write without some sort of inspiration and today my inspiration isn't the happiest of memories but definitely one of my stepping stones to growing up. On Facebook there is a "On This Day" app and it basically shows you all of your statuses or pictures on that particular day in past years. Well today, June 2nd my Facebook status was about how excited I was to go wedding dress shopping 3 years ago and I sat there reading it and not being able to believe how much had changed within those 3 years. I know I always come back to being engaged and my ex a lot and now that isn't because I'm not over it but honestly, that was probably the biggest turning point in my life thus far. I see all of these statuses each day and they take me down memory lane, they mostly remind me how happy and in love I was, or how many amazing friends I had/have. I say had/have because I can't believe how many people hav...
