So, obviously I haven't written since Christmas.... Well that is because I was to busy surprising my best friend who lives in Newfoundland!!! Its kind of confusing, because I have 2 best friends named Becca haha. I have the one who also has the blog and then the other one who moved away =(
Anyways, at about the beginning of December I really decided that I wanted to go surprise her. So, I looked online for tickets and messaged her Mom!! I needed some allies. So, throughout December I slowly figured out all the details, I got my tickets, figured out who was going to pick me up from the airport and everything. So, on Christmas day we skyped and she said how much she missed everyone here and how all she really wanted was to see a familiar face.... I could hardly contain my excitement. I almost spilled the beans once or twice. Finally the 28th had arrived and I had my flight was set for 12:05 am. My mom drove me to the airport and I was finally home free...... figuratively speaking of course. ;) ANYWAYS! I checked in for my flight and of course something went wrong... First off, my bags were only going to Toronto, not cool. Then my flight out of Calgary was delayed an hour and a half which meant I was going to miss my connection flight in Toronto. To be completely honest, the flight down there was a complete disaster. So, I finally get on the plane, get to Toronto just in time to grab my connecting flight with 15 minutes to spare!! Get on the plane, relieved I made it! And what do you know.........We sit on the runway for literally 3.5 hours. By this time, it was 11:45. ( I was supposed to get into St. Johns @ 11:30) ... Safe to say I wasn't getting in on time.......... I called her Mom and told her all my flights had been delayed. They told us we would be there by 1, Okay, thats not bad, only about an hour and a half late.... or we could just arrive at fricken 4 and screw everyone over. That sounds good.... So we get into the BEAUTIFUL city of St. Johns 4 on the dot. Woohoo!

Just a short walk from her Nans house. |
I just have to say that this place is unbelievably beautiful.... I was flabbergasted when I got off the plane to say the least. It was foggy and very windy, but just wonderful. I couldn't believe I was actually in the same country, I felt like I was on a whole different planet. It was insane. The coolest thing, honestly were these ridiculously narrow and twisty roads! I was sliding around the back seat the whole time I was there and really didn't seem to get a grasp on it lol. Anyways enough about the roads =)

The view from her Grandparents deck at the front of the house. |
We pull up to Bec's grandparents house and her mom called her to come out and get a Christmas present she had forgotten to give her, also, just so you know I was texting Bec this whole time and she said that she was just in a grumpy mood, so I thought well I can fix that !!!! So, I crouch in the back seat and she comes outside, I am pretty much crying by this point just seeing her after all this time. So, her mom is hugging her and spins her around and he aunt, who picked me up, told me to go!! So I went outside and wrapped my arms around the back of her. She was like, "what the hell is going on..." and her Mom told her to turn around.... I can say, never in my life have I seen that look on her face. Insert water works right here. For both of us. I was SO insanely excited to see her and it appeared that she was just as excited to see me! We cried and hugged for a bit and then the adventure was about to begin.............

St. Johns at night from Signal Hill |
The first night I was super tired from my extremely long night of flying. So, we kind of caught up a bit ate supper and then I went to bed at 8! I woke up at a decent hour the next day and we went for tea at her Nans with most or all of her aunts. I am not sure..... there are a lot of them. I met, her Nan, her aunt.... Noreen, Gloria, Trudy, Angela, Sandra, her uncle Mike and then her Mom was there and I am probably missing one or two but my lord this girls family is huge. We went there for awhile then to her Moms house. She was going to have a little family get together. Perfect, more people for me to remember the names of. =P ..... Little did I know this was just the beginning. We hung out at her Moms for a bit and then her cousin came and we decided to go up to Signal Hill, which is a really beautiful place! Unfortunately, it was a little to foggy for me to see the city lights like you usually can, but it was the thought that counts! haha. I obviously couldn't get a picture because of the fog, so I just got one from google to show you because the next time we went up I forgot to take one!! I actually just had a lot of fun driving around and looking at everything! It was so different, old and historic and beautiful.

Signal Hill |
The next day we decided to go shopping and basically blow all the Christmas money we had gotten. We got lots of stuff including 2 matching shirts and sweaters.... haha. I will throw some pictures up and you will see them!!! After we were done shopping her cousin came to get us, so we could go up to Signal Hill again, so I could see =) It was so pretty, but honestly unbelievably windy and I forgot to take my coat of the car and buuuurrrrr.... There was a really cool sign that told you what direction everything was in. Including London and where the Titanic sunk. It was really interesting to see actually.

Docks |

New Years |
We then went down to the docks to see all the boats?.... ships?....barge?....They were huge. That is all I have to say lol. It was just cool to be that close to the water all the time. It was super fun to see them and all the really old houses and roads that were up there too! There were roads that were so steep and narrow it was insane! Very, very cool to see!!! So, after that, we drove around and did some errands, picked some stuff up because it was New Years eve!! We got fireworks....out of a trailer. It was weird, but anyone can buy them down there which is really interesting. To be completely honest, I saw so many fireworks there it was unbelievable!! Her cousin picked up fireworks to take to his sisters house, for his nieces! So, he set them up and I will say I was a lot of help because I did hold the light? haha. They were so nice, we got one which was like $45 bucks and it was actually awesome!!! I love fireworks so it was really fun to see. After we were done there her cousin dropped us off at her grandparents so we could get ready for the New Years party at her Aunts house. OK! So, here goes the complete opposite side of the family.... I met..... Kathy, Claire, Beppy.... Oh shit. I failed on that side of the family... Oh well! lol. It was a lot of fun though, and of course we had more fireworks there!!! =) It was fantastic. The next morning we went to a brunch at her Aunt Claires. It was yummy!!! So much food! Including chocolate chip pancakes!! Then we had to go back to her grandparents because we needed to get ready for her Aunt... Gloria's (i think). She threw a New Years Day party!!! So many parties. Seriously.

Fireworks! |
So, her cousin comes and picks us up to go there and then we decide that we are going to go into town to watch the fireworks!! They were cancelled the night before because of the wind. We parked and walked down to a park called Quidi Vidi? To be completely honest that could be completely wrong... lol. But I am pretty sure that's what its called!!! So, we were there for the fire works which were insane. They were so beautiful and the radio station was there playing music along with the fire works which was really cool!!! =) aside from Gangman Style, but I dealt with it, we all did lol.
We went back to her aunts and everyone had moved downstairs. You know if movies where you see people all playing guitars and just singing and having an amazing time? This is seriously her family. We got there and they were all just having a blast singing and dancing. It was so much fun to see!!! They had such a musically talented family. I got to see a huge picture frame with pictures of everyone as a little kid and it was adorable. Becca has always been a cutie, that's for sure!!!! They all were to be honest. Pretty cute kids. =)
The next day we were really tired and slept in pretty late.... Except I had to work on my stupid paper for school so I did that until about noon. I really wanted to try some poutine there, because I heard they had the best, then I heard that Quebec had the best.... So, there we go. We went down to this poutine place downtown which I actually forget the name of with her cousin and his friend... It was actually pretty yummy. I really like poutine, but I only like the plain Jane kind. I am so boring lol. There were so many options!!! Bec got one with chicken and mushrooms I think? Her cousin got chili poutine, which perhaps is just chili fries, but I am not sure lol and his friend got the same as me. We were all pretty tired by that point so we headed home, but first we got Tim Hortans.... We got Tim Hortans a lot actually! =)

The most Eastern part of Canada |
Next day...Oh yes, so I guess this would take us to the 3rd. This day made me pretty sad because it was technically my last day there seeing as how I left at 5:25 am "Friday" morning. I completely forgot about going to see Cape Spear, thankfully her cousin agreed to drive us up there =)!!! So this place was about a half hour out side of St. Johns.... It absolutely breath taking! It is also the farthest East you can go in Canada. So basically I was on the edge of the country which was pretty spectacular. It was kind of windy and cold but well worth the trip!! There was an old Lighthouse up there to. We didn't venture all the way to the top because Becca couldn't feel her hands and I couldn't feel my face lol.

Cape Spear |
So, after we were finished here we headed back to her Grandparents. I started to pack everything up and get ready to go. I was starting to get so sad I didn't want to leave this place or Bec. But I had a lot of stuff waiting for me at home, so I got my luggage all set up and what not. BUT..... There was still one more thing left to do!!!!
I knew what is was, I just wasn't really sure what it included.... haha. So, we go into town and it was time for me to get "Screeched In", I guess I lasted there 5 days so, next was to become an honourary Newfoundlander.
We went to George Street. If you don't really know what that means.... Google. Seriously lol. So, it is basically just downtown in St. Johns, and then there was a bar called Trapper Johns. We went in and her cousin talked to the bartender and then it was about to begin. I am being so vague because this is literally how I was feeling...... Like What The HELL IS GONNA HAPPEN. So, all of a sudden this bartender rings this extremely loud bell and I stand at this really high bar alone while people watch.... He asked me where I was from and what I was doing there. Just a heads up, if they ask, and you are from Calgary.... Just lie. They don't like Calgary an awful lot. Just saying.... So, anyways he pours me a shot of screech, then gives me all these rules and all these fun facts about screech. I then had to take the shot, and then I had to recite something he said.
|
WTF! |
To be completely honest........ I have no idea what the hell this guy was saying and I felt a little stupid haha. Just to give you an idea, I took a picture with my webcam so you could see how I was feeling and I am pretty sure that was the exact face I gave the bartender trying to teach me this fricken oath thing....
<----- That is how I was feeling. Right there.
So, after he really slowed it down for me, I said it. Kissed a puffins ass and vuala! I was an honoury Newfoundlander. I got this little certificate and a shot glass and then I also stole a coaster lol.

My wonderful Certificate. |
So, I also wanted to add in a few little things that I thought were great, kind of weird and just didn't understand.... So for starters, there roads, were named the BEST THINGS EVER. That sounds pretty lame, which it could indeed be. But, they were awesome. I mean, honestly, who wouldn't want to live on Lois Lane, or Sugar Loaf Road?!?!
Seriously, every road sign I was, I just giggled to myself... Cause Bec and her cousin probably thought I was dumb lol.
The next thing that was just weird..... ALL the light switches for the bathrooms were OUTSIDE of the bathroom. OK I am not really sure whats going on here? I never fricken got the hang of it. Becca would watch me go into the bathroom just so she could watch me walk right back out and turn on the light......... You would think, hey, that's no big deal! But it was so weird and I still don't know to this day why? Like what if I was peeing and someone just switched the lights off. That would suck .
I am not even going to get into my flight back cause it was a train wreck.... I did make it home though!!
So, coming to a closer, all in all, I LOVED this place and I was so happy to see Rebecca. I cannot wait until she comes home!! Apparently it is absolutely beautiful there in the summer time, so maybe that will be an excuse to go back!! I can't believe I am back home already!!! It was so much fun though. I love this girl more then almost anything to be honest with everyone. She is my rock and I am hers. Sometimes we fight and disagree... But it doesn't mean anything, because we are there when we need each other. She needed me, so I was there. I love you Bec. <3 <3
